Is Charlie Weis the right guy for ND?

Worst loss in Irish history clouds the Weis rebuilding effort. Is there reason to believe there's still an upside to with him leading the program?

  1. It's embarrasing to be a ND fan these days . . . It seems like as the season goes on, it's looking more and more like the 07 season. There's no doubt that ND has talent, so what gives? Do you think the players just have some sort of mental block? Are the coaches just not preparing for their opponents?

Although I agree that throwing snowballs is extremely unsportsman like, and would never do it myself, the message is really clear. Fans are frustrated and angry.

  2. If Charlie is not the right coach, who then? What have you done for me lately??? ND is still Sophomore and Frosh heavy, they need time to become cohesive. He turned Brady into a first round pick, before that Brady was just another college QB. Clausen and friends will be in a different place as Juniors and Sophomores. Those of us who said that these kids were going from 3-9 to 9-3 were out of our minds. Poor Charles went from Genious with Juniors and Seniors (Brady Quinn and Friends) to chump because he is teaching a bunch of super talented "13th graders" how to win. Not only that, but you have to allow a build up of talent so the cupboard is not bare at the end of every 4 year run. Their was no one once Quinn and Co. left. It amazes me to no end how the ND faithful forget that. How easy it is for everyone to call for Charlie's head. Who will yo0u go after next? A coach that comes in now will come from a program where they had time to build a hot commodity. They will bring in a new system, needing a certain kind of talent, do you plan to give him time to develop his style? Let Charlie be, till he has his own, talented Seniors and Juniors running the show. To the Mark Mays of the world, Charlie's kids are coming for you and your ilk!

  3. The ones hoping hardest for a coaching change at ND are the coaches who compete with us for recruits. The Poodle will bring it all at us next week because the prospect of where ND will be two years from now is the biggest threat to his program. DickRod, Urban and the rest stand to gain much more from a coaching change at this point than Notre Dame will. Charlie has his faults and I am not blind to them. What keeps me in his corner (so far) is that I think he cares for the University and the Football program as much as I do and he has been building up the foundation of players. I think that a man can learn the X's & O's but I'm not sure recruiting is as easy to pick up and as we have learned with the last two hires, you either love the University or you don't. That doesn't come around.

  4. We've had 3 top 10 recruiting classes in a row. He's going to be the coach next year and THEN, ND will evaluate him at the end of the season. It's a lot more prudent to make that determination then and only then, not now. It would set the program back dramatically. If a new coach is needed after next year, we could win immediately in his first year.

  5. I seriously doubt Weis' ability to develop this team in 2009 or 2010, that is if he's still around. Does anyone remember how the supposedly experienced 2006 squad stacked up against the real competition that year. Has everyone forgotten about being blown out of the water by (Michigan, USC, and LSU)?

He's not going to develop this team into a squad that can compete with the best. That's what people saw in 2005 against USC. Let's see what happens this year...

  6. Weis' present offense is fatally flawed for today's college football game. That together with the officiating is causing psychological problems on the players. This all adds up to losses on the field. That being said I have a hard time believing ND will fire Weis this year. ND has 5 more years on his contract ($10M), a decent recruiting class committed(will they still come?), and a "consensus" soft schedule next year. ND will have a hard time parting with the "extra" $10M. ND could fix up the officating problem and have a talk with Weis about giving a bigger offensive role to Hayward (even less input from Weis) and next year's picture could be brighter.

  7. Stay tuned.... change could be on the way sooner than you think.
