Brian Kelly is the man. Good or Not so good?

Swarbrick does his job. Can Kelly do his now?

  1. Meyers or Stoops would have been a disaster. I doubt ND even approached Meyers, he said no 5 years ago. Stoops lost 3 Championships because he runs a predictable offense especially in the red zone. The stars were truly alligned for ND to obtain Kelly. This is really a big deal and a return to glory for ND. Now if ND can just do something about obtaining neutral officiating they could win a National Championship!

  2. I'm happy (so far) with this hire. I much prefer BK then Edsall from UCONN. Any word on his plans for the Weis regime coaching staff? I'm wondering if he's keeping polian, he's one of our top recruiters these past few years.

  3. Discipline, fundamentals, inspiration, and putting people in a position to succeed seems like ND football to me (at least my memories of our past glory days). Welcome, coach Kelly.

  4. On the media, there has been UNIVERSAL praise for this hire. I have no reason but to consider the guy a winner and give him the benefit of the doubt.

After going through what was to me the most disappointing season for ND football that I can recall in the 40 years I've been watching, at least I feel some sense of optimism.

I don't think he can fix it all in one year -- too many questions at QB and the entire defense -- but I think we will know the year after next.

  5. The program is irrelevant on the National scence and will remain that way because the administration is not committed to building a football powerhouse. Kelly will bring a few good seasons and some BCS bowls mainly because of such a weak schedule, dictated by the adm. ND will continue perform poorly against the top flight competition because of personnel. The problem with this job and why "Tier 1" guys will not touch it is the gap between what the fan base wants and expects and the administration's wants and expectations is too great. This split faction will continue to erode away at coaches and the program. ND had Stoops, but would not make consessions necessary to show full committment to building a football power, so he walked. The Rice's, Stonebreaker's and Zorich's of the world are going to other schools and those schools are playing for BCS titles.

  6. Seriously Dage, I'll guess that you're not a Notre Dame fan but just another one of those idiots who have one talking point "the program is irrelevant on the National scene". Note that I used the correct spelling of the word "scene". If they are so irrelevant then why are you commenting on them and why is the NATIONAL media paying them so much attention to them. I'll answer this for you, because they are extremely relevant. Weis recruited top talent NATIONWIDE, and even proved he could recruit top defensive talent this past year. The problem was he could not win games. To address your weak schedule comment, the answer is simply.....you're incorrect. Only 4 of the 12 teams they played were under .500. Furthermore they have not once, as far as I can remember, played any true cupcakes (D-II schools), i.e UT Chattanooga. They played two strong PAC-10 opponents and the Big East runner up this year as well. The only thing lacking in this program has been a true, strong head coach, this is what Mr. Kelly brings to the table. Other coaches had certain aspects of what it takes to be a head coach but not the whole package. Now we got it. Go Irish.

  7. Unfortunately for Dage above and the Joe Theismans of the world, football players are not mindless thugs. Dage's examples of who we won't get are perfect examples of who we WILL get. Chris Zorich came back to ND for a law degree, Tony Rice lives in South Bend and is really active in the alumni association. Men such as these will continue to come to Notre Dame. Look at Nix. He commited to Notre Dame despite the lack of a coach.

I don't know what his level of success will be, but Coach Kelly has exactly the right attitude with a focus on player development on and off the field. This is not the party attitude that attracts players to some schools, but why should we try to be something that we're not? We have something special at Notre Dame, and enough young men will recognize that to consistently field a team of great athletes.

I happily give Coach Kelly my full support and my annual donation to the general fund.

  8. Coach Kelly Lied to his players.. his fans.. and the city of Cincinnati. Coach Kelly has brought UC football to a national stage and as a UC fan I thank him for that. The manner in which he left this team... before they battle Florida in the Sugar Bowl will be his legacy. The 2010 ND FB schedule should be very kind to Coach Kelly and the Irish nation.... Maybe ND will rise to glory again and play UC in a BCS game in 2010... or maybe ND has their version of Rich Rod... a Big East - Spread Coach - who has one scholarship QB on the roster. Cincinnati Moeller is sending one of her sons to play QB for the Irish...I root for all the cincincy kids on the ND roster.... Coach Faust came from the Queen city.... but I just can't root for a man who mislead and then left his team.

  9. There's an unconfirmed rumor swirling that Kelly asked ND if he could coach the team in the Sugar Bowl, ND granted his wish, and UC told Kelly to take a hike. Seems plausible.
