You cannot push aside Michigan State! Are you kidding me? Please tell me the last time we beat MSU at Notre Dame Stadium? Notre Dame and Michigan State are at the same level right now as far as I'm concerned. Until this team takes control of this series, this game will always be close if not a loss if they are not careful. I would like nothing more than seeing Sparta fall in South Bend, but these "300" idiots can put up a fight! Go back to 2005, Weis' first season. Notre Dame beats GT and U of M on the road, comes home and loses at home to State. Now was that the first game at home syndrome? Maybe, so being that Nevada kicks off the season at home, maybe this will be the year that ND reclaims their turf. We have more talent, but ND has been in this position before with this team, and the team with more heart usually wins.
The point you're making is actually right on target with the ultimate question, can Charlie Weis get it done? We have the talent, the coaching staff, the experience, the offensive line, etc.... Any good coach could beat Michigan State. I think it's totally doable.
just to make it clear, in weis's first season we opened the year with a win at pitt on the road, then won at mich, and came home and lost to mich st. the gt win was year 2 of the weis era.
Yes a lot of things are pointing in the right direction this year. There are only two things that are still big unknowns, Charlie's offensive play calling and the officiating. The most important thing I heard this fall camp was when Charlie stated he was planning on using less plays this year but running them out of more formations. Finally the opposing defense (and the rest of the world) will not know exactly which play is coming. This will do wonders for the offensive line play. And finally I don't know how anyone in their right mind would agree to use officials from the conference of the team they are playing. Makes me think all ND leadership (along with the whole ND family) have some screws loose.
