Why Urban Meyer makes sense

Is there truly a "mystique" at Notre Dame that can lure Urban away from Florida? The argument for and against. Brammer and Jordanich go at it.

  1. The "host" of this show is the typical, delusional ND fan that makes me want to vomit (as the "guest" so accurately pointed out -- oh, and I am a Notre Dame person). He actually believes there is something special about ND that somehow translate to anything involving football -- this is scary stuff. If you hate ND, you should listen to this podcast -- the "host" will somehow make you hate it more. Please do not think that all ND fans are as delusional as this nutcase. I love ND and agreed with everything the "guest" had to say. Oh, and I love that Urb declared his lifetime commitment to the Gators the same day this moron put up this podcast. Urb can't win at ND and he knows it (I'm not sure anybody can - see below). There is not one logical reason for him to give up his perfect job at FLA for the ND job - and the fact that you think he might because ND is "so special" qualifies you as possibly mentally insane.

Hey "host" -- wake up. You are whacked out of your head. You are nothing special. ND is a great place and a great university. All of your talk about "appeal" is absurd -- you should replay this podcast and listen to the words coming out of your mouth -- they are insane. Those things have no relationship to the football program. ND is a bad football program because we do not have good football players. Good football players do not want to go to a school with cold winters, parietals, and tough academics. They want to go to schools in the southeast that win championships, have good weather and hot girls and where they don't have to study hard.

    Seriously, this is scary sh!t.

  2. No way Urban Meyer is going to the dome. I am a rabid Irish fan but this is just delusional. We may be rid of Charlie but please note that no good coach is going to come in.

  3. Crazy Talk, I am an ND grad, and that's just not going to happen, Meyer has way too much going for him in Florida. He has some point with ND being the pinnacle of Catholic University's in the world, but that has more appeal for academia, not athletics. Maybe that's why we have the best fencing team in the country and some of the best in the world.

  4. Hey Alfonso,
Ok We agree. Urban Meyer is not coming to ND but........ you have been listening too much to Colin Cowterd. GET ORIGINAL!

  5. Good comments... ND is not an ideal place to coach. Honestly, Charlie Weis tenure has not been statistically good however, the man has heart. Truth be told, that is ND's story now. ND is not an every-year powerhouse. They can however, build with Weis. He can still get recruits and they are fun to watch. Focus on defense, focus on specials, keep our recruits from leaving and let ND be its own Rudy story. Charlie won't give up.

  6. Brammer I hate to break it to you but you have spent way to much time in South Bend being brainwashed. I have news for you but ND's appeal stems from its football program being great historically, not from being a catholic school. This is coming from a catholic ND grad from the east coast who came to ND only because of its reputation as a good school with a good athletic (primarily football) program. ND has a valuable "brand" that is derived only from its past football success. I really didn't care much that it is a catholic school. There are lots of great catholic schools out there (BC, Georgetown) to choose from. ND is distinguished by having a historically great athletic program that has a reputation for being clean, with good student athletes.. One of my concerns is that if the football program continues to wither away the reputation of the university will follow. If you are waiting to find a football coach who somehow values the fact that ND is a great 'catholic' school don't hold your breath.

  7. You guys do a consitently enjoyable podcast but please see what you can do on the audio quality side of things. Volume is very inconsistent, sometimes there are jarring changes in the level. Some inexpensive software/equipment can make for a better listening experience. Thanks.

  8. The host who suggested that Urban Meyers would leave Florida to become the coach at Notre Dame is totally delusional and out of his mind. I think this is the type of mindset that has scared away quality coaches from accepting the ND coaching position. There is absolutely, positively no chance that Urban Meyers would leave Florida. The reason ND was only able to get an offensive coordinator to coach the ND program is because the ND fan base is too hard on their coaches.

  9. Relax people. Meyer isn't coming and it doesn't matter. ND will land Kelly and he'll restore solid football fundamentals and a winning attitude. Will ND compete for the NC every year? No. But you can believe that the Irish won't look like the current train wreck every Saturday. Sit back and enjoy the transition. I know that I will.

  10. Nd is finished for three reasons !

    1) No player wants to play for such a pathetic team.
    2) Nd cant recruit the athletes who are ideal for weaker academic schools.
    3) Who in there right mind would pick South Bend over Sunny California or Florida.

With that said Texas, Florida and USC will dominate CFB

  11. Another note I think ND has completely sold out. Its typical for any organization revolving around religion. Nd Games are torture to watch these days with all of the commercials. I have never seen anything like it ever ! On top of that they have stuck with a coach who in my book is a complete and total failure. The problem now is ND is a Rutgers, Buffalo, Nevada style team. They just cant compete with the big boys, and without lowering the standards of the school you can kiss the Football program goodbye. USC should refuse to play Nd and go with a better team such as Texas or Alabama. Nd is finished !

  12. Weis had only one fatal flaw: he didn't have any deception in his offensive game plan, the other team always knew what was coming. With deception his offense could have scored 12-21 more points a game and then so what if the defense wasn't that good.

In regards to the next coach I have been plesently surprised by the media: they seem to be speaking positively about ND and truly trying to make good coaching recommendations. When Willingham was going to be fired, there was nothing but negative things being said about ND at that time which made it tough to attract a good coach. I think this present positive "atmosphere" will allow ND to attract someone like Kelly, the Iowa coach, or the Northwestern coach. Personnally I don't think Meyer, Stoops, or Harbough are the right fit.

  13. I am not even sure ND is a Catholic University, yeah right a Faux Catholic Priest (Jenkins) invites The Uber Abortionist President for their Grad Ceremony.
Anyway, their new Coach needs to be a master motivator, a teacher of the fundamentals, a good recruiter, and the Admin has to kick in with some help if need be on the academic front for the next "Zorich" recruit. Otherwise The ND Brand will remain in perm Limbo Status.

  14. When Alabama finally decided to get it together they went after a coach who they knew could bring them to the BCS Bowl. It took years for them to make the right decision and they has to pay dearly for it. They also had to bend the rules of the BCS to recruit the right players. With that said ND will never play by those rules. The last great coach, Holts, bent many rules to get players into Notre Dame. Since than they have played by the rules, and you can see where they are currently. I don't see this ND team turning around anytime soon. Its Level B ball for the fighting Irish for many years to come.

  15. OK, domers, relax. The point I was trying to make is that the Notre Dame "mystique" does exists, always has, and always will, AS LONG AS the school remains true to it's original call. Urban Meyer is a fit for us and should be approached by ND for the following reasons:
    1) He said as recently as THIS YEAR on a radio show that ND is his dream job.
    2) He has experienced ND first hand and presumably, has a sense for the "mystique". Otherwise, why else did he say it's his dream job?
    3) He's named after a Pope (well documented story). :)

Look, ND has a pitch to make to this guy that goes like this "Urban, we think you're a good fit. ND is a special place, and you can make history by coming to ND, restoring the football program, and gaining recognition world-wide in doing so." Urban Meyer will never be as big as he could be by coaching Florida to X number of BCS championships compared to winning one at ND.

  16. If that's the best pitch ND can make to the #1 college football coach in the country, then they might as well stay home and save themselves some jet fuel. No need to fly down to Florida only to insult Urban Meyer's intelligence. I have to believe by now Meyer understands what it means to be Notre Dame's head coach. I'm pretty sure he understood it when he passed on the opportunity five years ago.

ND has a mystique; it's just borderline irrelevant a decade into the BCS era. Our Lady on the Dome means very little to a coach trying to secure the personnel the school needs: defensive recruits--and I mean legitimate hard-hitters, not just scrappy, smart guys with heart--not seen in South Bend in a very long time.

So if the school wants Urban Meyer, they can't afford to waste his time waxing romantic about the virtues of a single championship under Touchdown Jesus as opposed to racking up titles in the SEC. They just need to ask one question: "What will get you to say yes?" and open up the checkbook. A dream job is very different from a dream scenario.
