Are the pieces in place to run the table?

Yes, Wimbush's accuracy a concern, and maybe pass coverage by CB's. But are things in place to make a serious run if we play to our potential?

  1. I was at the game/ not impressed with defense or
Wimbush passing/ looks like maybe the 15th to 20th
    best team in the nation/

  2. Hopefully with the coaches help, we will see the Wimbish from the Sparty game here on out. Receivers need to help too not getting separation or just dropping passes in the end zone. EQ looked better coming back for the ball on scrambles. Watkins needs help on coverage. He was Miami's target on 3rd and long. Bye week opportunity to work on for a strong second half finish

  3. Let's review. ND plays the currently #6 team in the country on even terms, then handily wins the other 3 games they've played against power 5 teams or Div FBS teams, and you judge that they are not as good as up to 20 other power 5 teams, most of whom you haven't seen play?
That's quite a gift you have there!
If you're a fan, how about letting the season play out a little bit before burying the Irish in a mid level bowl, huh?

  4. I too was at the game, but I take a different view... It was Miami (o) and it seemed to be run more like a scrimmage.

  5. Good team with a chance to get much better, must have better QB play, needs to trust himself more, go through progressions quicker and make a decision. Need a little better play calling based on WR placement. Supposedly the fastest guy on the Roster should not be pigeonholed to the slot, the (WRs)should be positioned(moved around)based on the weakness of the Defense. ND defense has been good and opportunistic, which is part of what makes a good defense even better, at times its the bend don't break mentality. Overall the team is improving, sometimes I think we can see pretty from the stands and forget these are still 18-23 year old young men, who have lapses in judgment and focus, it's reality. Thankful for where the team stands and the possibilities of more success.

    1. Pretty good analysis. I think we're all guilty of forgetting we're dealing with kids for the most part. College Football is incredibly competitive, except for Alabama who seems to be on another level. We'll see later this year for sure.

  6. Coffey, Todd Helton was a pitcher for the Colorado Rockies, clay Helton is the coach for Southern Cal. I thought it was worth mentioning since twice you called him Todd. Southern Cal caught lightning in a bottle last year winning the Rose Bowl, when they shouldn't have been in the game if not for the fact that Washington went to the playoffs. With the exception of the Stanford game Southern Cal has struggled this year looking far short their preseason hype. Speaking of struggle Watching Nick Watkins on Saturday reminded me of a couple of years ago when Kelly pulled a cornerback to the sidelines and told him "if you don't turn around to look for the ball you are not going to play" I have a feeling Nick got that same talk, I believe Nick will bounce back nicely this weekend.

    1. Not to split hairs, but Todd Helton was a first baseman, and a damn good one at that. I do agree Watkins will bounce back, he's been solid most of the time.

  7. Alabama has only 1 ranked team on their entire schedule and that is Auburn, who will likely not finish in the top 20. Clemson, Oklahoma, Penn State, and Georgia should all be ranked higher than Alabama

    1. With the way Alabama is winning each week, they aren't going to drop. Agree, they don't deserve to be ranked where they are based on strength of schedule, but you can't blame them for that. Anyway, should be interesting to see where BCS poll starts out.

  8. Bama and Clemson are a cut above others. I think ND can run table but it's way too early to know how the 4 spots would shake out. Let's get UNC this weekend!
