Irish win ugly. Is it more of the same for this year?

Mission accomplished. We win the game, but not the way we wanted. What went wrong?

  1. After seeing Saturday's performance - it's highly doubtful this squad will win more than 6 games.

  2. ...Clausen still can't throw the long out pattern...the vaunted defensive backfield isn't...linebackers didn't defend against the pass...what is Terrell lambert doing still playing?...Hughes looks and runs a slow as a fullback...Armando Allen looks great...how about putting both in the same backfield and run out of an "I"?...

  3. ...p.s....the receivers looked superb!...

  4. The problem is clear- we have no dominant offensive or defensive linemen. When you can't run the ball on a patchwork D-line that is probably giving up 30-40 pounds and 3-4 inches per man and you can't garner any QB pressure whatsover when you're blitzing your brains out (how many times did the Irish bring 6 players, 6 Aztecs were blocking and the QB had had 5 or more seconds???)

Notre Dame's linemen on both sides of the ball simply could not win enough 1-on-1 matchups, and they are going to face so much more talent and more importantly depth over the course of the next 3 months...it's just disconcerting...if we don't see a nasty streak out of these guys against Michigan, it's gonna be a long season.

  5. Deception is missing!!! ND's opponents always know when ND is going to run the ball, there is never any deception in ND's game plan. If ND would run the ball out of passing formations about 50% of the time and pass out of running formations about 50% of the time, the running game would be just fine.

  6. It is way too soon in the season to be making general assumptions about this team. We could win ugly again this Saturday and be 2-0. I'll take that all day long. MSU will be the defining game for the Irish this season.

  7. The team certainly looked ugly. However, it was more disconcerting to see how we got out coached. Shovel passes, misdirection and unstoppable passing, and poor consistency in the running game-while throwing very ineffective blitzes. That is my concern, along with lousy o-line play. I agree, it's too early to throw in the towel, but this team needs more than dramatic improvement to be successful, they need an attitude adjustment. I'm just not sure Charlie can rally the troops at the college level. On the bright side- Clausen and the receivers looked awesome, and they are still just Frosh/Soph's (except Grimes). So that's good. The running backs are also just Soph's. The secondary was usually in position to make plays, but since the blitzes didn't work, they were left hanging too often. The 4th qtr comeback was refreshing, even if against an outmanned opponent. Remember, this is not our year. 7-5 would be great. However, to get there we will need a lot more inspiration and dramatic improvement on the line.
